Private Networks - Connecting Remote Locations
The need to communicate efficiently between remote offices is becoming more and more of a necessity in today's fast paced information age. Private networks, otherwise known as Wide Area Networks, require businesses to invest heavily in expensive leased lines and Frame Relay circuits to connect offices to their headquarters. Infrastructure and hardware investments are massive, requiring businesses to pay high setup fees and lock them in to long term contracts.
Along came Virtual Private Networks, allowing businesses to use low cost DSL lines and small, sometimes inexpensive, hardware devices to create, in a sense a private network. VPN's for the most part were a great solution for the small to medium sized enterprise but its attractiveness came at a price.
With today's business applications requiring high bandwidth, VPN's failed. Businesses with anything more then a handful of locations found themselves spending money to bring up a new location while managing equipment at each location, sometimes scattered across the country.
